Following the deadline of February 1 for submissions to host the 2024 Finn European Masters, the only bid recieved was from the Yacht Club de Cannes.

Therefore they have been offered the event and have accepted.

The expected dates will be in early October.

Cannes is a popular venue for the class with the annual Semaine Internationale de Cannes de Finn the traditional season opener in Europe. YC de Cannes also boasts one of the biggest Finn fleets in France, if not the world.

The class looks forward to having its first major championship there for 20 years, after the Finn World Masters was hosted in Cannes in 2004.

Dear Finn Masters

Never in the history of the Finn class has the Finn World Masters been held in Finland. Seventy years ago, in 1952, however, Helsinki marked the beginning of a long Olympic history for the Finns with the first Olympics to include the Finn. To celebrate this anniversary, the 2022 Finn World Masters is being held in Helsinki with many reminders during the week of that first Finn Olympics seven decades ago.

ENTRY FOR FINN WORLD MASTERS OPENS ON DECEMBER 1

The organisation is well underway and the Finnish fleet is very keen to put on a great event for all of us. We have now published the Notice of Race and entry opens this week. All the links are below.

The championship is being organised by Helsinki Sail Racing Management (HSRM), in cooperation with the Finnish Sailing and Boating Federation, the Finnish Finn Class sailors and the City of Helsinki.

The harbour at Helsingfors Segelklubb (HSK) includes a great clubhouse, fabulous restaurant, saunas and permanent changing rooms and is the best venue for dinghy sailing in the Helsinki region. It is located just 4 km from downtown Helsinki. The club can easily accommodate over 300 boats with trailers and cars on its premises. There are two 30-40 metre ramps next to dinghy parks.

Camping is possible at HSK with space for 40-50 camper vans, and a few tents, or at NJK just 3 km away. Most of the Helsinki boat equipment shops are located within walking distance. There are many different racing areas available, for all conditions. The nearest one is about 1.5 nm away.

There is lot of information on the event website regarding the venue and travel, with much more being added over the next few months.

Entry opens on December 1.

The event website is fwm2022.com

The entry form and Notice on Race can be found on Manage2Sail here.

MASTERS EUROPEANS

We have also published a lot of early information about the Master Europeans here at Club Náutico Hospitalet-Vandellos, in L'Hospitalet de l'Infant, Tarragona, Spain. This is being held in mid-September.

FURTHER AFIELD

Looking further afield we are also talking to the organisers for the 2023 and 2024 Finn World Masters. I am sure you agree that we have a great programme of events and venues ahead of us in the next five years, with a lot of interest already in venues after this current programme is concluded. There has never been a better time to sail the Finn Masters events and as the world hopefully returns to near normal, I am sure we will begin the see the big numbers return.

It may interest you to know that the mailing list for these newsletters goes out to over 1,000 Finn Masters, including both those who have done a Finn Masters event in the last five years as well as those who have signed up to receive the news.

I look forward to seeing you at one or more regattas in 2022 and wish you all a happy New Year when that time arrives.

History of the municipaly

Until the end of the 19th century, and since the Middle Ages, in the plain of L'Hospitalet, only the village of L'Hospitalet de l'Infant existed. It was made up of a group of houses arranged around the hospital, which gives its name to the town located at the mouth of the Llastres river ravine. Throughout this period it was a land of passage between the Ebro and the Valencian lands, to the south, and the Camp de Tarragona and Barcelona, to the north. It was a dangerous territory, feared by travelers, since the surroundings of the Balaguer pass and the Torn mountain were always full of pirates and bandits, always attentive to the assault of the caravans that circulated on the roads. For this reason, in 1346 the Infante Pedro IV and his mother, Blanca de Anjou, founded a hospital with the function of assisting travelers in need. In this hospital the different caravans that traveled south were grouped, and those that, coming up from Terres de l'Ebre, had crossed the Alfama desert and the dreaded Balaguer hill, rested.

The coast of Hospitalet presents practically virgin beaches where you can hear the sound of the waves while breathing the air of the valley, L'Hospitalet has always been a welcoming land since ancient times. At the same time, the beaches closest to Hospitalet are a marvel of facilities and services.

Map of the town with indicators of essential services is attached below.

Weather

Throughout the year in l’Hospitalet de l'Infant the north wind predominates, from June to October are the months with the mildest average winds. In September we enjoy mild days, wake up in the morning with a pleasant land wind to end the afternoon with about 10-12knts of southern component and a bit of choppy waves; with average temperatures of 24o, typical of the Mediterranean climate for those dates.
